Community Fuel Cells

Project Location: Holtsville & Setauket, NY
Client: Private Developer

Fuel cell power plants are part of a community distributed generation program, allowing the public to purchase power directly at reduced rates, and share in a cleaner energy source with fewer carbon emissions. Nelson + Pope prepared plans for hydrogen fuel cell installations at two sites, one in Setauket and one in Holtsville. A three-fuel cell, 1.38 MW power plant was designed for Setauket, and a two-fuel cell, 920 kW power plant was designed for Holtsville. The fuel cells interconnect directly to the utility grid with a medium voltage feeder. The design included a site plan to locate the fuel cells and their ancillary support equipment, low voltage and medium voltage switchgear, step-up transformers, full electrical design, and a fuel gas service. N+P provided utility liaison services and coordination with PSEG Long Island, and National Grid for utility interconnection. In addition to design of the fuel cell power plants, N+P performed boundary and topographic surveys for the properties, as well as site plans for permitting and compliance improvements with the Town and County, and right-of-way improvements. N+P’s scope also included permitting, contractor bid solicitation, and construction administration services.
