Quaker Meeting House Road/Bethpage Road Roundabout

The Nassau County Department of Public Works retained Nelson + Pope under its On-Call Traffic Engineering Services contract to evaluate improvements, provide traffic engineering, roadway design, and construction support services for the Quaker Meeting House Road/Bethpage Road, Round Swamp Road, and Thomas Powell Boulevard intersection in Farmingdale. The project was undertaken to improve traffic operations, reduce congestion, and enhance safety for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists through the evaluation, design, and implementation of a modern intersection improvement. Following a comprehensive feasibility study, traffic analysis, and the evaluation of multiple alternatives, a modern roundabout was selected as the preferred alternative and the project advanced through final design d into construction.   The project transforms a complex, offset intersection into a modern roundabout that improves safety, calms traffic, enhances multimodal mobility, and supports Nassau County’s long-term transportation objectives.

Nelson + Pope provided a full range of engineering services, including traffic data collection, traffic capacity and safety analyses, crash evaluations, topographic surveying and mapping, conceptual alternatives development, public outreach support, utility coordination, roadway and drainage design, preparation of plans, specifications, cost estimates, and bidding assistance. The project required careful consideration of existing right-of-way limitations, roadway geometry, sight distance constraints, multimodal accommodations, and maintenance of traffic requirements to develop a solution that improves operational efficiency while reducing vehicle conflicts and speeds.

The selected roundabout design enhances intersection capacity, improves traffic flow, reduces delay, and provides a safer environment for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Nelson + Pope continues to support the County during construction, providing shop drawing review, responses to requests for information, construction observation, coordination with contractor and County and preparation of record drawings.
